CMO

Clause 4 of the Public Hospital Career Medical Officers’ (State) Award establishes a grading committee to consider and make recommendations in relation to the appointment to the Senior Career Medical Officer grade.

Clause 4 of the Award also provides the criteria that you must meet to be appointed to the senior career medical officer grade. They are:

  • have at least 7 years post Graduate clinical experience;
  • and have a demonstrated capacity to perform clinical duties & responsibilities at a senior level with minimal clinical supervision in one or more areas of medical specialty;
  • and is required by the employer to perform clinical duties & responsibilities at a senior level with minimal clinical supervision in one or more areas of medical specialty as required by the employer

There is a requirement that when the application in the form required by the Award and the NSW Health Guideline GL2008_005 (attached) is provided to the Senior CMO Grading Committee, it must be considered by the SCMO Grading Committee within 28 days.

The grading committee, which ASMOF is part of, meets monthly and deals with all applications promptly. However, we have observed that there are frequently significant delays between when a CMO prepares the application, and when the application is endorsed by the clinical supervisor and Chief Executive (which usually becomes the operative date for the progression).

CMOs who are experiencing a delay in having their applications for progression to Senior CMO, or have queries about the process should contact ASMOF at allocation@asmof.org.au or on 9212 6900 for a more detailed explanation of the process and assistance.
