Merry Christmas 2017 from the Doctors’ Union

08-Dec-2017

We are fast approaching the end of another successful year for our Union and I take this opportunity to thank all the members who make ASMOF such a united, strong and respected union.

In 2017 we have successfully campaigned against the privatisation of public hospitals and successfully campaigned for safe working hours for our junior doctors. Soon, for the first time ever, our union will 5000 members strong.

Marriage Equality is a union issue

It is also a wonderful end to the year for all our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) members, and all members who believe in social justice and equal rights for all Australians, with yesterday’s historic vote in the House of Representatives to legalise same sex marriage.

Unions like ASMOF have a proud record of fighting for a just and fair society for everyone.  Our members work hard every day to end discrimination in the workplace and yesterday’s vote was one step closer to ending discrimination in Australian laws.

Fighting discrimination is, and will always be a union issue. And that is why in 2018 we will campaign to end gender discrimination in our hospitals and in the profession.

Christmas closedown

We previously told members about the 2017-18 Christmas Closedown period.

We remind all members that whilst we encourage you to take your leave over the holiday period most members cannot be directed to take annual leave to cover the close period. And no one can be directed to take Long Service leave under any circumstances.

If you do not wish to take leave over the close down period the LHD must find a reasonable alternative work arrangement for you.

However, your hard-working union staff will be taking some time off and the ASMOF Union Office will at 5pm on Friday 22 December 2017 and re open at 9am Tuesday 2 January 2018.

During this time, we won’t be able to attend to your inquiry. But if your matter is extremely urgent (for example your employment has been terminated) and cannot wait until 2 January 2018, you may leave a message at 9212 6900 and your issue will be attended to.

I take this opportunity on behalf of the Union’s officials, industrial and administrative staff, to wish all members and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.
