Doctors Maintain Pressure on Government to Fully Fund Shellharbour Hospital

17-Nov-2017

On Sunday 12 November 2017, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and members from the community of the Illawarra celebrated the victory of Shellharbour Hospital remaining in public hands.

It was a beautiful day at the Warilla Surf Club, with food, drinks and fun activities for the kids. In particular, it was a pleasure to see our doctors and their families relaxing and enjoying the victory after tirelessly campaigning for over a year.

We thank all our members who have attended rallies, spoken to community members, held interviews with the media, written articles to politicians and encouraged colleagues to speak up.

We also thank our members for protecting the training and education of our junior doctors, and ensuring the highest standards of patient care continued to be delivered to the patients of Shellharbour and surrounding areas.

However, our doctors recognise the $251 million announcement is inadequate, and have begun collectively lobbying for more funds for the redevelopment of Shellharbour Hospital.

Over the weekend, eighty-two doctors across the District collectively signed a letter calling on the NSW Government to fully fund the project.

They acknowledge and thank the NSW Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard, and parliamentary secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward, for meeting and listening to the community and ultimately reversing the decision.

They note, however, “the Government identified the urgent need for redevelopment of Shellharbour Hospital and that the 2015 commitment by the government of $251 million was inadequate.”

‘’In order for the NSW Government to now regain credibility and public trust, it must meet community expectations by fully funding this public hospital’s redevelopment,’’ the letter states. ‘’We now call upon the NSW Government to provide the necessary funding for Shellharbour Hospital’s redevelopment as a matter of great urgency.’’

Labor MP for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, held the letter up in yesterday on the floor of parliament, and stated, “Mr Speaker I remind this house a very similar letter sent and signed by a group of Illawarra based doctors, opposing the Government’s initial decision to pursue a PPP for Shellharbour Hospital. I hope that the Government will not make the same mistake again, and I hope that this time they will heed the warning.”

“Considering the future estimated growth of the Shellharbour area, and the fact that our growth rate will soon overtake that of Wollongong’s, this redevelopment must plan for the future of our region”, she stated.

The Doctors’ Union will continue to campaign for a properly funded public Hospitals across NSW which promote and protect the conditions of our members, ensure that our junior doctors are properly trained, and continue to provide safe patient care.
