SafeWork NSW release new guidelines for mental health

NSW has become the first state in Australia to introduce a Code of Practice to formally clarify the legal responsibilities that employers have to address mental health hazards in the workplace.

SafeWork NSW have released a new Code of Practice, Managing Psychological Hazards at Work. This code applies to all work and workplaces covered by the WHS Act- including NSW hospitals.

For years unions have argued the Work Health & Safety Act 2011 was not adequately preventing psychological harm to workers. In 2019 SafeWork NSW formed a working group including Unions NSW to address the increasing problem of poor mental health as a result of workplace behaviours and conditions.

Unions NSW have reported that the consultation with the Unions NSW WHS Committee was genuine and lengthy and Unions advice, expertise and the lived experiences of members was significant in achieving this win. The new code can be accessed here.
