Union Win: paid pandemic leave for all workers in NSW!

Last week, unions had a big win for NSW workers: a paid pandemic leave scheme for all workers!

This campaign began back in March. By April, the union movement in NSW had successfully negotiated paid pandemic leave for over 400,000 workers in NSW (including NSW Health employees who have access to paid special leave of up to 20 days). It wasn't possible without the many thousands of union members who signed petitions, emailed and called their MP as part of the campaign led by Unions NSW.

For months, the NSW Government resisted our calls to provide paid pandemic leave to all workers, especially contract and casual workers who missed out.

Now the NSW and Federal Government have finally acted on our campaign with a paid pandemic leave scheme for all workers in NSW.

Under the Government scheme, any NSW worker who has no leave entitlements will be eligible for a one-off $1500 payment for each 14 day period that they are directed by NSW Health to self-isolate or quarantine, or during which they are caring for someone with COVID-19.

The existing 20 days paid special leave will still apply for all members in NSW Health.

This new form of leave does not impact directly our members employed in NSW health as you already have access to 20 days paid special leave. However, it is still important to be aware of as it may be of benefit to members of your family and friends depending on their work situation.
