Update on Model Scopes of Clinical Practice Project

28-Jun-2019

The State Scope of Clinical Practice Unit works on behalf of all NSW Health Local Health Districts and Specialty Networks and is hosted by the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. The primary goal is to assist NSW Health Local Health Districts and specialty networks to appropriately define the scope of clinical practice of their employed and contracted senior medical practitioners and dentists.

The project engages with the medical and dental workforce to develop model scopes of clinical practice for each medical specialty and dentistry, according to best-known practice. These are intended to assist Local Health Districts and Specialty Networks to achieve clarity and uniformity in the way practitioners’ scope of clinical practice is defined, whilst still allowing for local decisions to be made in accordance with the facility’s need and its role delineation.

The model scopes of clinical practice will also provide a measure of expert input and advice when considering the credentials appropriate for the practice of particular specialities and sub-specialties.

The Unit undertake research into current policy and practice in other organisations; provide advice to NSW Health regarding credentialing and scope of clinical practice policy and procedure, and consult widely with relevant stakeholders.

The State Scope of Clinical Practice Unit has released for consultation the eleventh tranche of draft model Scopes of Clinical Practice (SoCP), which includes:

  1. Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology
  2. Endodontics
  3. Forensic Odontology
  4. Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
  5. Oral Surgery
  6. Orthodontics
  7. Paediatric Dentistry
  8. Periodontics
  9. Public Health Dentistry
  10. Special Needs Dentistry

The draft model SoCPs have been developed with working groups, usually with broad representation of specialists nominated by Local Health Districts and Specialty Networks including, where applicable, rural or regional areas and a Director of Medical Services or Oral Health Manager, as well as nominees from relevant Colleges, specialty societies or academies.

The draft documents, consultation questions, background of the project and progress on formation of working groups are available at www.schn.health.nsw.gov.au/ssocpu, with comments sought on the eleventh tranche of draft model SoCPs by Friday, 26 July 2019.
