Win for Parents

Dear Member,

I am writing to let you know that from 1 July any public sector employee (regardless of gender) who has the primary responsibility for the care of a newborn child will have access to 14 weeks paid leave.

This is a great win for doctors who are parents, and important step towards improved gender equity in the workplace. You can read about why this change is so important in Women's Agenda

The Public Service Association (PSA) first asked the NSW Government to consider this change over a decade ago, and the Union movement has continued to push for the provision since then.

Initially this change will be implemented via a Premiers Memorandum. Eventually the Medical Officer's Award will incorporate this entitlement.  You can read more about the new provision on the PSA Website here.
ASMOF has been pushing to improve doctors' parental leave entitlements for the past decade. We have made submissions to the Australian Human Rights Commissions, met multiple times with the Ministry of Health (MOH), and advocated for changes to the Award and NSW Health Policies. We have also has taken individual cases to the Industrial Relations Commission, in order to get a fairer outcome for our members.

Our campaign is paying off and in 2021 we are set to see further improvements to parental leave entitlements for doctors in training. We outlined what those changes will be in our last newsletter for doctors in training. If you missed it, you can find it here.

At our meeting yesterday, the Ministry confirmed that most of our feedback and recommendations on the new policy had been taken on board. The draft parental leave policy will be updated with the new parental leave entitlements and subject to final consultation.

We will keep our members updated of these changes.

Warm regards,

Andrew Holland
Executive Director
