Statement on the Voice to Parliament
Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation supports the 'YES' Campaign
“ASMOF is committed to policies that will deliver better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
– ASMOF President Dr Tony Sara
After over 65,000 years of continuous culture, it is time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were recognised in our 122-year-old Constitution.
ASMOF NSW, the Doctors’ Union is proud to join the
Union movement campaign in support of a 'YES' vote to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Australian Constitution.
Racism is a serious health issue; it directly contributes to poorer physical and mental health outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
This is why we are steadfastly committed to policies that will deliver better health outcomes for all Australians, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
By voting 'YES' on referendum day, we can seize this opportunity to take practical steps to
close the gap and improve the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Support for the
First Nations Voice to Parliament is a true reflection of union principles: consultation, democracy, and collective voice.
When we listen to people about decisions that affect them, we get better results.
By enshrining a Voice in the Constitution, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will be enabled to provide advice from a grassroots level to the federal Parliament on policies and projects that impact their lives and communities.
So when the time comes, we will walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have so worked tirelessly to bring the Voice proposal to Referendum.
Our position on the Voice to Parliament was formally endorsed by the ASMOF Federal Executive and NSW State Council in March 2023.
Always was. Always Will Be.
